Set Up Claude in 5 Steps โ The Complete Beginner Guide
Most people open Claude, type something vague, get a mediocre response, and conclude AI isn't that useful. The problem isn't Claude. It's the setup. Without context, instructions, and a proper workspace, you're giving a highly capable professional zero information about who you are or what you need.
These five steps take about 10 minutes. After them, Claude will know your job, your preferences, and your recurring needs โ without you re-explaining every session.
Step 1: Create a free account at claude.ai
Go to claude.ai and sign up. The free tier gives you access to Claude Sonnet โ the same model used in most examples on this site. You don't need to pay to complete this setup or follow any of the beginner guides here.
Step 2: Set your Custom Instructions
Go to Settings โ Custom Instructions. You'll see two fields. Fill them in with this template:
What should Claude know about me:
I'm a [job title] at [company name], a [company type].
My main responsibilities: [2-3 bullet points]
I primarily use Claude for: [e.g. "drafting emails, summarizing documents, decisions"]
Industry context: [e.g. "we sell to mid-market HR teams in the US"]
How Claude should respond:
- Be direct. Skip the preamble and get to the answer.
- No bullet points unless I ask. Prose is fine.
- Never use filler phrases like "Great question!" or "Certainly!"
- If I'm wrong about something, tell me clearly.
- Default response length: concise. I'll ask for more if I need it.Step 3: Create a Project
Click Projects in the left sidebar โ New Project. Name it after your main work context. Then click Project Instructions and paste a paragraph describing what this Project is for, what context Claude should always have, and your preferred output format for tasks done here.
Step 4: Upload a key document
Inside your Project, click the paperclip โ upload a document Claude will need repeatedly. A style guide, a product spec, a client list. It's now always available. You never have to paste it again.
Step 5: Send your first structured prompt
Open a conversation inside your Project and use this format:
You are a [role, e.g. "senior communications strategist"].
Task: [exactly what you need]
Context: [relevant background]
Format: [exactly how you want the output]
Rules:
- [specific constraint]
- [e.g. "No more than 150 words"]For teams
