Your first Claude prompt (beginner template)

The simplest structured prompt that works for almost any task. Use this until the structure becomes automatic.

You are a [role, e.g. 'senior copywriter']. I need you to [specific task]. Context: [relevant background โ€” who this is for, what it's about, any constraints] Please respond in [format โ€” e.g. '3 bullet points' / '2-paragraph summary' / 'numbered list'].

Ask Claude to critique its own answer

Send this immediately after any response you're not satisfied with. Almost always produces a noticeably better second answer.

Look at your last response critically. 1. What is the weakest or most generic part? 2. What assumption did you make that might be wrong? 3. What would a more expert answer include that yours doesn't? Now rewrite the response with those improvements applied.

The LLM Council โ€” make AI disagree with you

Forces Claude to argue multiple sides instead of agreeing. Critical for important choices.

I need to make a decision about: [describe decision] My current leaning: [what you're thinking] Play five distinct advisors: 1. The Skeptic โ€” argues against my leaning with real evidence 2. The Optimist โ€” makes the strongest case for my leaning 3. The Risk Manager โ€” identifies the worst realistic downside 4. The Pragmatist โ€” asks what I'm missing 5. The Devil's Advocate โ€” proposes a third option End with a Chairman's summary: one recommended path and the one condition that would change it.

Pressure test any plan or idea

Ask Claude to find every hole in your plan before someone else does.

I'm going to share a plan. Your job is NOT to tell me what's good about it. Find every weakness, assumption, and risk I haven't fully considered. Be direct. Be specific. If you find a fatal flaw, say so clearly. Structure your critique as: - Assumptions I'm making that might be wrong - Risks I'm underweighting - Things I haven't thought through - The one thing most likely to cause this to fail My plan: [describe your plan]

Verify any AI answer before trusting it

Run this after any factual claim you plan to act on. Catches hallucinations before they cause problems.

Before I use your last answer, check it. 1. Which specific claims are you most uncertain about? 2. Which facts could you have gotten wrong? 3. What should I verify independently before acting on this? 4. Is there anything that would change significantly if [key variable] were different? Be honest โ€” I'd rather know you're uncertain than have you sound confident and be wrong.
